Historical Resume: Over 175 years R&D experience with insulation and corrosion protection coatings
2025 · SP Coatings
SP Coatings reflects on a remarkable legacy of coating research, development and innovation spanning over 175 combined years of experience in the industry.
"Block the heat before it enters. Stop corrosion before it starts."

— J.E. Pritchett, President SP Coatings
SP Coatings has accumulated over 175 years of combined research and development experience with insulation and corrosion protection coatings. This extraordinary depth of knowledge — spread across the entire SP Coatings team — represents an unmatched foundation of ceramic coating science, field application expertise and industrial problem-solving.
The Foundation: NASA Research 1989–1995
Between 1989 and 1995, SP Coatings founder J.E. Pritchett worked directly with NASA in a six-year research programme focused on ceramic compound behaviour. This work identified which ceramic structures function in thin films for radiative heat blocking and which are required for thick insulation systems — a distinction that still separates SP Coatings products from all competitors.
The knowledge gained from this NASA partnership remains proprietary to SP Coatings. No other manufacturer has replicated this level of fundamental ceramic research applied to industrial coatings.
What 175 Years of R&D Means
This is not simply years in business. The 175 years represents the cumulative research experience of the SP Coatings team across:
- Ceramic compound behaviour and formulation
- Thin-film radiative heat blocking
- Thick-film conducted heat management
- Corrosion chemistry and protection mechanisms
- Field application science across every climate and industry
- Independent laboratory testing and validation
Why This Matters for Customers
When a customer applies SP Coatings products, they are accessing the deepest knowledge base available in the industrial coatings industry. Our products perform as claimed because they are built on verified science — not marketing claims.
This is why SP Coatings products have been independently validated across thousands of real-world installations, from the Hoover Dam to Pemex offshore platforms in the Gulf of Mexico, from Japanese industrial facilities to Antarctic research stations.
The Knowledge Gap That Still Exists
Most insulation coating manufacturers entered the market by copying the superficial appearance of ceramic coatings — without understanding the underlying physics. A thick coating cannot block radiative heat the way a properly engineered thin ceramic film can. The physics doesn't allow it.
SP Coatings is the only manufacturer that has developed both thin-film and thick-film ceramic systems, each engineered for a completely different heat-control function. This dual capability reflects 37 years of continuous ceramic insulation research — not four years, not marketing hype.
